Guinea pigs like to be in groups. Well at least most of them, if you’re trying to get two guinea pigs used to each other this is how you do it.
With males and females there will always be one dominant one and that’s ok! Some guinea pigs will not get along but just try your hardest to find your guinea pig a furry friend.
The benefits for having two or more guinea pigs if that
- They will try new things
- They will be more interactive with you
- They will be healthier and possibly live longer!
The bare minimum size for 2 guinea pigs to share a cage is 7.5 square feet but 10.5 square feet is much better! You can also make your own cage with wood or just some sort of wiring with small holes.
If your guinea pigs don’t like each other try new metheds for them to get along but if it doesn’t work out then try and find them new friends that they get along with or you can keep them separate.
Some ways to get them used to each other is put them both on your lap with food and then try and put them on your bathroom floor for example with two piles of hay with food, away from each others.
Use wet paper towels on them so they can’t overpower each other with their scents. Some things to do before you let them be alone together are to put their cages next to another so they can sniff each other and get to know one another before they can come in contact.
You should watch them for a little bit to make sure their not fighting once in contact but then you should also leave them alone because you can actually affect how they act towards each other.
If theirs blood drawn, hair pulled, or any irregular fighting take a step backwards and have them be separate for awhile then try again slower or different methods than you did before. Any squeaking or jumping on each other is completely normal.
Once you have had them together doing different tactics for awhile and they seem to get along and not mind each other or even bond, then you can try easing them into sharing a cage.
