The base to a healthy and comfy guinea pig is a clean cage. Without it your furry friend will most likely start to have respiratory issues. So this is why and how your change a guinea pigs cage.
Signs of respiratory problems
- labored and/or rapid breathing
- discharge from the eyes and nostrils
- sneezing and coughing
This can be cause by you not cleaning your cage regularly, once a week is a good amount. This includes emptying it of the old bedding. Im lucky enough that a trash bag can fit around the cage.
Replacing it with the new clean bedding, you need to wipe down the sides of the cage with a baby wipe keeping it clean. It depends on were you live but putting your little guy outside using the top of the cage isn’t a bad idea. (Just make sure there’s someone watching them since birds will snatch them up).
Checking their water regularly is also necessary since they will run out of it more than once a week. My sister also has a guinea pig. So we put their cage together so they can talk while we clean there cages. They don’t get along well enough for us to put them together so they stay in separate cages. (My sister wrote an article about “How to get two guinea pigs used to one another.” After you clean the cage I have a tradition to sit them on my lap while I do school, watch tv, or reading. He does have a tendency to chew on my book pages though.
Your guinea pig depends on you to give them what they need. I love my little guy till the end of the world I give him nothing but the best that I can do. Your friend needs the same love and attention and keeping their cage clean is the were you start! So this is how you change a guinea pigs cage!
